- Uses the SPD SL system. SPD, which stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics, is a system of clipless pedals. There is a metal plate on the bottom of the cycling shoe that clicks into the pedal. This allows you to apply force not only by pushing, but also by pulling, which is more efficient. The original SPD pedals allowed little to no movement of the foot relative to the pedal. If the pedals were poorly adjusted, this could lead to knee problems. The new SPD-SL pedals do allow a small amount of rotation.
