Among women's wetsuits we can distinguish two different types of wetsuits, namely long-sleeved wetsuits and sleeveless wetsuits.
Triathlon wetsuits with long sleeves are the standard among wetsuits today. Because the arms are provided with high-quality neoprene, you can swim faster, your arms cool down less quickly and you save energy.
Another major advantage is that no water can enter through the sleeve openings because they fit tightly on your wrists, unlike sleeveless wetsuits. The small layer of water that enters is through the neck. This layer of water is warmed by your body heat, so you are better protected against the cold in cooler water.
Due to continuous developments and improvements in the neoprene panels, the shoulders have also become a lot more flexible. In the past, the neoprene around the shoulders could be quite stiff, meaning you needed a lot of strength to make your swimming strokes. But today, fortunately, that problem has been resolved. The more flexible shoulder panels allow you to make your swimming strokes more comfortably and freely.
This used to be the most common and used type of wetsuit, for both women and men. This was because the development of neoprene had not yet reached the level it is today. The neoprene panels around the shoulders were a lot stiffer then. This stiffer neoprene caused you to suffer from weakened arms and shoulders more quickly, which meant that it cost you a lot of energy to make the swimming stroke. This was especially noticeable when you swam long distances. That is why many swimmers opted for a sleeveless wetsuit.
Another important point to take into account is that if you have a smaller chest size, the neoprene can connect less well to the skin, allowing water to enter through the armpits / shoulders. This has an inhibitory effect. If you have a somewhat narrower chest, it is better to go for a wetsuit with long sleeves. If you have a larger chest size, the firmness of the neoprene ensures that it fits well on your skin.
Do you want more freedom of movement? Then you can opt for a sleeveless wetsuit, which ensures that you can make a freer swimming stroke, which ensures better swimming comfort. Even if you swim in warmer water, a sleeveless wetsuit can be a nice solution. This offers a little more cooling because your arms are not covered with neoprene.
Are you going to buy your first wetsuit or does your current wetsuit need to be replaced? Then it is important to look carefully at the buoyancy. This is one of the most important criteria when choosing your new wetsuit.
The anatomy of women is different from that of men. That is why women's wetsuits are specially tailored to the female figure. In general, ladies often have wider hips, wider lower legs and a wider waist than men. As a result, the natural buoyancy is different and the lower body naturally lies higher in the water.
That is why it is important to look carefully at the buoyancy of your desired wetsuit. Otherwise, it can cause your legs to end up too high in the water. As a result, you cannot always make your swimming stroke smoothly and it creates an unnatural feeling. The buoyancy of the women's wetsuits can consist of a neutral buoyancy, an average buoyancy or a maximum buoyancy.
Good buoyancy ensures that you do not suffer from so-called “sinking legs”. This is something we see more often with novice men, but also regularly with ladies. The ideal position is when you lie horizontally in the water. When your legs are sinking, your legs are too deep in the water, causing you to lie at an angle, as it were. This means you have more resistance from the water and it takes more energy to move forward.
If you want a little more buoyancy, you can go for a wetsuit with thicker neoprene panels. These panels range up to a thickness of 5mm.
Are you an advanced swimmer? Then you can also go for a wetsuit with a more neutral buoyancy. As an advanced swimmer, you have often already mastered the technique and position better. Would you like to do a half or full triathlon? Then you can also choose a wetsuit with maximum buoyancy. The reason this was chosen is that you don't have to work your legs as hard, which means you save your legs more for cycling and running.
Wetsuits specially designed for the front crawl and breaststroke have different properties, tailored to your swimming movement. Wetsuits for the front crawl are specially designed to have optimal flexibility and freedom of movement, especially in the arm and shoulder regions. This is important because of the intensive arm movements you make during the front crawl, but also for a hydrodynamic form in the water. In addition, in front crawl wetsuits the buoyancy is often concentrated around the lower part of the body, to provide extra support for your legs for an optimal flat horizontal position when you are in the water.
Breaststroke wetsuits, on the other hand, have been specially developed with a focus on extra flexibility at the hips and knees, as the leg movement is different compared to the front crawl. The buoyancy in these west suits is often more evenly distributed, which helps to give you a balanced position in the water, an important criteria in the breaststroke. The breaststroke wetsuits can also contain specific reinforcements or materials that improve and optimize the unique movement of your breaststroke, while you as a swimmer are not hindered in your movements.
A good fit is perhaps the most important point to pay attention to when purchasing your new wetsuit. It is better to have a well-fitting wetsuit than a very high-quality wetsuit with many features that does not fit your body properly.
Women's wetsuits differ considerably in fit compared to a men's wetsuit. For example, women's wetsuits are slightly shorter at the back and legs, but wider around the hips and butt, and more space has also been created around the chest.
These are several small differences, perhaps only a few centimeters, but these ensure that a women's wetsuit is different from a men's wetsuit. Because of these differences, a women's wetsuit fits perfectly to your posture.
