What is a saferswimmer / swimming buoy?

A safer swimmer, also called a swimming buoy, is a buoy that is often used by open water swimmers to increase your visibility when you are swimming. A very important and essential part for every swimmer. In the water, only your head is almost always visible and if you do not stand out, you can easily collide with boats, jet skis or other water users. That is why the swimming buoys are extra brightly colored such as neon orange or yellow. In addition, the swimming buoy has another important function, namely they can serve as a floating support point that you as a swimmer can hold on to in case of emergency or fatigue.

The swimming buoy is equipped with a belt that you put around your waist and a cord with which the buoy floats behind you. The buoy lies, as it were, on the water, so you experience virtually no resistance or it gets in the way when you swim the breaststroke. Many saferswimmers also have a so-called drying compartment in which you can put your personal items such as your keys, wallet, telephone, etc. This way you never have to leave your personal items unattended.

Why use a swimming buoy during open water swimming?

A swimming buoy is an important and indispensable tool for every swimmer, especially if you enjoy swimming in open water. Using a safer swimmer has several advantages that contribute to both your swimming safety and comfort.

• Increased visibility: The swimming buoys are specially made to stand out in the water. For example, they can be bright orange, yellow or pink, making it easier for other water users to see you in the water.
• As a safety aid: If you are swimming a little too enthusiastically and become tired, get cramps or if another emergency arises, the swimming buoy can serve as an important support point. This can be of vital importance so that you can rest for a while without going under.
• Storing personal belongings: Many swimming buoys have a waterproof compartment where you can store your personal belongings and then take them with you while swimming. Think of your keys, ID, smartphone, car keys, etc. This way you don't have to worry about these items being left unattended on land and being stolen.
• As a confidence tool: knowing that you are taking an extra tool with you can reassure your confidence. It can increase your confidence, which is nice if you are a novice swimmer or if you feel less comfortable in open water.
• For legal or competition requirements: The use of a saferswimmer may be required by local regulations or by the competition organization as an extra safety measure. (A swimming buoy is often not allowed during swimming competitions/tours, during triathlons).
