Assos premium cycling clothing since 1976

Assos is an innovative pioneering brand specializing in developing high-quality cycling clothing and accessories.

The adventure for the Assos brand began in 1976. Founder Tony Maier-Moussa had designed a unique type of racing bike in the 1970s: an aerodynamic carbon road bike. To see if his new road bike was truly superior, Tony tested it in a wind tunnel. Although he saw that his design indeed performed much better, Tony noticed that the rider's position is much more important for aerodynamics.

With this in mind, Tony also started testing different types of fabrics and materials in the wind tunnel. After several tests, Tony realized that wool was not ideal for cycling clothing. It had too much air resistance. They even tested a naked cyclist to see if the skin produced faster results. But this test also showed that the skin didn't provide the fastest results. Tony, his wife, Elaine Maier-Moussa, and a good friend, Hans Hess (a Swiss downhill ski race suit maker), began searching for the ideal fabric for his cycling clothing. They accidentally stumbled upon Lycra, a super-stretchy fabric. When his new Lycra cycling shorts were introduced, there was initial skepticism, but when the Ti-Raleigh pro cycling team started wearing the Lycra clothing, they quickly noticed the benefits—so much so that the rest of the peloton also switched to Lycra clothing. Elaine Maier-Moussa, Tony's wife, is of Greek descent and came up with the name for this innovative cycling clothing. In Greek, Assos means ""the first, the best."" Today, Assos remains a family business based in Switzerland, where it all began. Assos is still working on the most innovative cycling clothing there.
