The story behind EVOC – from the first protector backpack to a global brand

EVOC didn’t start at a drawing board but in the mountains. During a photo shoot in the Arlberg region, founder Holger Feist was caught in an avalanche. He escaped without lasting injuries, but did suffer a back injury caused by the hard avalanche shovel in his backpack. His conclusion was simple: this could have been prevented with a backpack that truly offers protection. That’s where the idea for the first protector backpack was born.

On a later mountain bike expedition to Everest Base Camp, a second problem became apparent: poor fit and awkward bike packs that felt like a “football on your back”. Back in Munich, Holger started cutting, sewing and testing himself. First purely for his own use and for friends, later as serious prototypes. In 2003, the first protector backpack was tested in the rough terrain around La Paz (Bolivia) and proved its worth in real-world use.

On those trips he encountered yet another frustration: bikes coming off the plane damaged because there were no good bike cases. This became the basis for the first Bike Travel Bag, a bag that lets you transport a bike safely and practically without having to strip it down completely. What started as a solution for his own needs soon became popular with other riders and shops.

In 2008, Holger Feist and his travel companion Bernd Stucke officially founded EVOC – a brand name that stands for “evolutionary concept”. The focus has been the same from day one: developing high-quality backpacks, bags and bike travel cases that combine protection, functionality and comfort. Since then, the brand has grown into a global player in protector backpacks and bike travel transport, but the way of working has remained the same. The products are still tested on real trails, in the snow and at airports, so that today you ride with gear that is the result of decades of real-world experience.
